The Hard Realities And Misconceptions Of Dorm Life
Starting college is one of the most significant life changes a person goes through, especially if you decide to live in a dorm. It means finally moving out of your parents’ house and living alone, almost entirely independently, without anyone looking over you. The change is exciting, but it can also be full of struggles like bad roommates, dirty communal bathrooms, and much more.
It’s Going To Be Easier Studying In A Dorm
Finding the money to pay for college can be very stressful, and if you’re taking out loans, it can be even more stressful to pay them back. Students often have to work extra shifts during their college years to repay student loans, which affects their grades and mental and physical well-being.
You may have close access to a student café and library but with so many new friends, and so much todo with them, it can become tough to concentrate on what’s actually important. You might be someone who prefers studying late into the night, but even that could be a problem if you have a roommate who can’t sleep with the lights on.
Dorms Are Cheaper
This is another misconception about dorm and college life that is widespread nowadays. While again, this can be true, usually, if you get the same number of roommates together and rent an apartment off-campus, it can be much more affordable than a dorm. Dorms are more about living the ‘college life’ than making accommodation more affordable for students.
Resident Assistant Are All Strict
Everyone has heard of stories about RAs being strict and a pain. But RAs are students too, and if you are good with them and follow the set rules, they are easy to befriend. Keep in mind that RAs are doing their job; it just so happens that they make you turn down the music, and it is nothing personal. Let them do their job and stay on their good side, in case you ever want to have a little party in your dorm someday!
Social Pressure
Social pressure is something every college student has to face. This isn’t a challenge confined to just dorm life, but a challenge for college life in general. You might be the biggest introverted bookworm there is, but there are bound to be a few instances of getting pulled into something you might have never tried.
This is especially true in dorms where you might get a roommate that has the complete opposite personality as yours. You might be forced to attend a few parties and a few football games during your dorm life.
Living With So Many Students!
Yes, people will be everywhere! Even the most extroverted people could get overwhelmed having to deal with the insanely social environment of dorms. This is an especially hard thing to go through for introverts and students who love their privacy. The social life of dorms is constant, and it can get very tiring, particularly when you are trying to study.
Taking Care Of Yourself And Your Room
Living in a dorm means taking care of the cleaning and tidying up yourself. You no longer have your parents looking after you. This means taking care of yourself when you are sick, taking out the trash yourself, cleaning your bathroom yourself, and of course, tidying up and doing the dishes all by yourself (your roommate might help, if you are lucky). Dorms rarely have cleaners, so all the responsibilities rest on your shoulders.
Final Thoughts
Although all these challenges are real, college and dorm life can be the best and most fun time of your life. You will make new friendships, live new experiences, and face new challenges of dorm life that you will look back to as fond and loving memories later on in life!
